Toolkit: Pushing back on voter I.D.

  • MAGA extremists in the statehouse know they are in trouble - which is why they are trying to work up their base with a ballot amendment to enshrine voter ID requirements into the Ohio constitution.

We know that voter ID is just a way to make it harder for people to vote. Ohio began requiring I.D. at the polls in 2023. The law prevented at least  7,000 votes from being counted in the 2024 presidential election. Yet we know voter ID laws make sense to most people and tend to poll very well.

State lawmakers are expected to vote on a joint resolution to put a proposed amendment on the ballot this week. The following recommendations are based on deep focus group research conducted by ASO and a digital test Innovation Ohio ran on the Grow Progress platform.

  • Nonpartisan (c3) Narrative

Extremist Ohio politicians and their billionaire backers are pushing for voter ID requirements in the state constitution this November.  But here's the thing: voter ID is already the law in Ohio. So why are they spending their time and your money rehashing something that's settled? Because they'd rather fight fake problems than deal with real ones -- like how they're squeezing Ohio families by jacking up the cost of groceries, rent, and energy bills. Their real intentions are clear: make it harder for us to vote so that they can hold on to power. Don't let them change the subject. We will decide our future, choose our leaders, and ensure the will of the people prevails. Hands Off Our Vote.

    Political (c4) Narrative

Vivek Ramaswamy and his fellow MAGA Republicans are pushing for voter ID requirements in the state constitution this November.  But here's the thing: voter ID is already the law in Ohio. So why are they spending their time and your money rehashing something that's settled? Because they'd rather fight fake problems than deal with real ones they've caused -- like squeezing Ohio families by jacking up the cost of groceries, rent, and energy bills. Vivek’s real intentions are clear: make it harder for us to vote so that they can hold on to power. Don't let him change the subject from his dangerous policies. We will decide our future, choose our leaders, and ensure the will of the people prevails. Hands Off Our Vote.

    • Just last year, Ohio politicians bragged  about how safe and secure our elections are. Now they want to make it harder for us to vote because they know they’re agenda isn’t popular.

    • When politicians want to keep people from voting, you have to wonder what they're trying to do to us. Hands off our vote.

    • When politicians have to make it harder for us to vote for them to win, that means we have to show them that we are the ones who decide our future.

    C4 Sample Talking Points

    • Vivek and his MAGA buddies would rather fight fake problems than deal with real ones they've caused -- like the rising cost of groceries, rent, and energy bills that are squeezing Ohio families every single day.

    • Vivek and his MAGA backers want to keep us from voting because they know we’re tired of them rigging the rules to line their own pockets while Ohio families work harder than ever just to make ends meet.

    • Vivek knows his agenda isn't popular and that most Ohioans don't trust a tech billionaire’s self-serving policies. That's why he is throwing up hurdles to keep people from voting.

    • We are the ones who decide our future - not Vivek and his billionaire buddies. Let's show up and show them that Ohio rejects their fear mongering and their lies.

    • Ohio’s MAGA Republicans can’t win without making it harder for us to vote, so let’s show them that we are the ones who decide our future.
