Turner’s Vote Threatens Health Services in Greene County
New report shows that Mike Turner voted to put Xenia Hospital at risk for closure.
COLUMBUS, OH — Patients in and around Greene County could soon be deprived of critical medical care due U.S. Rep Mike Turner’s (R-Dayton) in support of last year’s reconciliation package. That’s the conclusion of a new report from Public Citizen, which details how cuts to health care in President Trump’s “One Big Beautiful Bill Act” – dubbed The “Big Ugly Law” by opponents – puts 450 hospitals at high risk for closure, including Greene Memorial Hospital in Xenia. The report shows that communities with hospitals at risk for closure are more likely to serve Black and Hispanic residents, and nearly 20% of the hospitals serve high poverty areas.
Greene Memorial primarily serves the City of Xenia, which has a population of about 26,000. Xenia’s median household income is just over $56,000 compared to the state median of more than $71,000. Nearly 18% of residents live in poverty, and about 20% are people of color, according to the Census Bureau’s American Community Survey. In 2025, Greene Memorial had more than 16,000 visits to its emergency room and provided more than 134,000 outpatient visits, according to the hospital system’s 2024 annual report.
“It’s mind boggling that Mike Turner voted to jeopardize a hospital in his district just to further line the pockets of the wealthy and big corporations," Innovation Ohio President and CEO Michael McGovern said. “Medicaid saves lives, helps people recover from addiction, and improves people’s overall wellbeing. By providing hospitals with an important source of revenue, it supports one of Ohio’s biggest industries, health care. The people of Xenia deserve to be represented by someone who cares more about them and less about cutting their health care to cut taxes for greedy billionaires.”
Kettering Health, which owns Greene Memorial, announced plans to close the hospital in 2024. After community outcry, Kettering reversed course and instead decided to renovate the facility. However Kettering has already cut critical services since taking over in 2007. The hospital closed its labor and delivery unit in 2009; inpatient and psychiatric unit and rehabilitation services in 2012; and the ICU and surgery center in 2020.
“Not only did Mike Turner vote to deprive his constituents of affordable health care at a time when so many are struggling to make ends meet, he voted to make it harder for them to get the care they need in the first place,” McGovern said. “He needs to explain why he voted to further enrich a handful of billionaires over hardworking Ohio families. It seems like he has been in Washington for so long that he's forgotten who he really serves.”
